Mounted Rick Barrett Katana

SOLD

Rick Barrett occupies a position as one of the notable sword smiths in the United States working in Japanese styles,. He is a well rounded metal smith exhibiting skill in a variety of knife and sword creations inspired by both traditional and fantasy forms. His Japanese styled works have been carried out in various steel types ranging from high carbon alloy monosteels and pattern welds, to oroshigane creations that have excellent consistency, and active yakibas.

This particular Katana is his composition of 1095, 1045, and L6 in a sanmai configuration of construction. It is my understanding that since he now favors other materials and compositions he no longer makes sanmai swords of this blend, this particular sword being the last one of its kind he has produced in several years. This sword is 28 3/8 inches long. It has a robust width at 1 5/16 inches, and is ¼ inch thick at the mune. The kissaki is an extended chu. It is torisori.

The ji is nagare itame with masame throughout, and is generally quite large in structure. The hamon is based on midare with nijuba (secondary habuchi), with a pointed komaru boshi.

The fittings were made by Patrick Hastings and consist of a brass ishime textured fuchi and kashira with matching sayajiri. The habaki is bonded with a decorative mokumegane. The pierced openwork tsuba is also brass with a warm brown patina. The navy blue silk ito secures menuki of a Cockerel and Hen. The saya has a textured black finish.

A nice work for the practitioner or collector.
